Smoke detectors
Smoke detectors include an electronic PCB (Printed Circuit Board) and a sensor that is closed in a chamber that includes the components necessary for detection of smoke. The detectors sense the smoke from a fire and activate an alarm. Smoke detectors are easy to install and maintain and their purpose is to detect smoke accumulation in the locations they were installed.
Smoke detectors shall be installed on the ceiling, as smoke tends to rise. Standards requirement call for installation of smoke detectors in every level. On the ground level smoke detectors are typically installed on the ground floor and in every level of the stairway. Detectors should also be installed wherever there are TVs, computers, or other large electric appliances. Smoke detectors should be installed away from air-conditioning vents to ensure that smoke is not blown away from the detectors.
Dirt, dust, and extreme temperature changes may cause false alarms and detector malfunction. To prevent false alarms locate defecators away from air conditioning vents or fans. Areas where smoke or steam are likely to be present should have heat detectors.
Do not paint over the smoke detectors and check fire detection systems as per the manufacturer's recommendation.
Fire detection standards such as EN 54, UL 268 specify the function and location of smoke detectors. Refer to your local standards are guidelines for more information regarding fire safety.
